UPDATE: Power Fully Restored To All Saline County Customers

UPDATE: As of 11:25 p.m., Westar Energy was reporting that power to all effected customers in Saline County has been fully restored.

Westar says the outage was caused by damage from a lightning strike from thunderstorms that passed through the area Wednesday evening.

More than 2,600 customers were effected by the outage, nearly 2,000 of those were in southern sections of Salina. The outages also effected a large area south of Salina, from Mentor to the Saline-McPherson County line. The towns of Mentor, Assaria and Bridgeport were all effected by the outage.

The outage effected traffic signals at some Salina intersections and required officers to direct traffic for a time.

In Salina, power was fully restored by 9:30 p.m. More than 500 customers south of Salina were without power until after 11 p.m.

UPDATE: Westar Energy continues to work on restoring power to customers south of Salina.

More than 500 customers in an area from just north of Mentor to the Saline-McPherson County line have been without power since shortly after 7:30 p.m.

Westar says the outage was caused by damage from a lightning strike from thunderstorms that passed through the area Wednesday evening.

Westar estimates that power should be fully restored to effected customers by 11:30 p.m.

UPDATE: Power to customers inside Salina has been fully restored. More than 600 customers outside Salina still remain without power as of 9:30 p.m. Westar is currently re-evaluating the situation and has not announced an updated restoration time for customers outside of Salina.

There has still been no official word on the cause of the outage.

As of 7:55 p.m. Westar Energy is reporting numerous power outages across south Salina and sections of southern Saline County, including the entire towns of Assaria, Bridgeport and Mentor.

There is no immediate word on the cause of the outage, though there have been reports of transformer explosions from the Saline County dispatch center since 7:45 p.m. Traffic signals are reported to be out at some intersections in the southern sections of Salina. Drivers are urged to use extreme caution.

More than 2,600 customers were effected as of 7:55 p.m. Westar is reporting that power should be restored by 9:30 p.m.
