The Radio Shack store located in Salina’s Sunset Plaza may not close.
The Salina Scoop spoke with a manager of the store on Thursday and she confirmed the store was not on a list of locations to be closed. Employees were originally told the store would not be closing and then were informed otherwise last weekend.
The Fort Worth, Texas-based company closed its Central Mall location this past Sunday and shifted some employees over to the Sunset Plaza store.
Earlier this month, Radio Shack filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for the second time in just over two years. In a court filing, the company listed 552 stores that it would close as part of the bankruptcy. Among them were Salina’s Central Mall store, which closed March 26th, as well as locations in El Dorado, Lawrence, Topeka and six Kansas City area stores.
The list from the court filing, that has since been published online, also did not list the Sunset Plaza location.
A “store closing” banner, which was put up earlier in the week on the exterior of the Sunset Plaza store, has been removed. However, several “all sales final” signs remain in place and a significant amount of inventory has been sold.
The store manager indicated that if the store does close, it would most likely be at the end of May, but she hopes that will not be the case. “I’m fighting to keep it open,” she said.
